Sungazer
Sungazer, a New York duo formed by bassist Adam Neely and drummer Shawn Crowder, has been developing since the 2010s a music at the crossroads of jazz fusion, electronic music and progressive rock. Anchored in jazz and contemporary pop culture, Sungazer works with asymmetrical meters, grooves inspired by drum'n'bass and harmonies close to modern jazz, alternating highly written passages with shorter spaces for improvisation. The project first drew attention online—notably through Adam Neely’s music-education and outreach activities—and later established itself as a live band with tours in North America and Europe. After several singles and two EPs, the duo released the album Perihelion in 2021, which consolidates Sungazer’s aesthetic around dense electronic textures, melodic bass lines and detailed drumming, occasionally expanded by guest musicians. On stage, Sungazer adapts these compositions into a more open format, playing with the reconfiguration of structures, precise work on dynamics and a sonic aesthetic positioned between contemporary jazz clubs, prog scenes and festivals dedicated to experimental music.
