Theon Cross

Born and raised in London to a family of Jamaican and Saint Lucian origins, Theon Cross has made his mark on the British jazz scene by restoring the tuba to a central role — rhythmic, harmonic and melodic. Initially trained on the tenor horn before switching to tuba in his teens, he discovered jazz through the Tomorrow’s Warriors programme and went on to study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. His career has developed at the intersection of contemporary London jazz, Caribbean pulses and a very physical approach to groove and collective improvisation. A key member of Sons of Kemet, Theon Cross has also performed alongside Nubya Garcia, Moses Boyd and the collective Steam Down, and taken part in various projects that accompanied the rise of London’s new jazz scene. As a solo artist he released the EP Aspirations in 2015 and the albums Fyah (2019) and Intra‑I (2021). In his personal projects as well as collaborations, Theon Cross cultivates a dense, mobile sound in which the tuba is not confined to accompaniment but structures the entire musical discourse.
