Jon Anderson

Born in Accrington, Lancashire, Jon Anderson developed in the 1960s a very high tenor voice and a songwriting approach oriented toward progressive rock, symphonic rock and, in his solo work, more melodic or ambient forms. After spells with The Warriors and Mabel Greer’s Toyshop, he co-founded Yes in 1968 with Chris Squire and, as lead singer and lyricist, helped define the band’s sound on key albums such as The Yes Album (1971), Fragile (1971) and Close to the Edge (1972). His work is distinguished by clear vocal lines, ambitious harmonies and lyrics often linked to imagination, spirituality or nature. Alongside Yes, he launched a solo discography with Olias of Sunhillow (1976), then Song of Seven (1980) and Animation (1982), while broadening his career through collaborations such as Jon and Vangelis, Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe, Anderson/Stolt and the Anderson Ponty Band. From the 2010s onward he continued solo touring and expanded collaborative projects, before releasing 1000 Hands: Chapter One in 2019 and True in 2024 with The Band Geeks, a lineup with which he also revisited parts of Yes’s classic repertoire on stage.
