Loverboy
Formed in Calgary, Alberta, in the late 1970s around singer Mike Reno and guitarist Paul Dean, Loverboy established itself in the early 1980s on the North American rock scene with a sound that straddled melodic hard rock, arena rock and pop rock, driven by straightforward choruses, prominent keyboards and production tailored for both the stage and FM radio. The classic Loverboy lineup also included Doug Johnson on keyboards, Scott Smith on bass and Matt Frenette on drums — a five‑piece that prioritized efficiency and hooks. Their debut album, Loverboy, was released in 1980, followed by Get Lucky (1981), Keep It Up (1983), Lovin’ Every Minute of It (1985) and Wildside (1987), milestones in a career marked by a steady movement between high‑energy rock, taut ballads and AOR touches. After a quieter period in the 1990s, Loverboy issued VI in 1997, Just Getting Started in 2007 and Unfinished Business in 2014. Still active on classic rock stages and at festivals, Loverboy retains an immediately identifiable aesthetic based on the combination of rhythmic power, crisp guitars and highly melodic vocal lines.
