Claude Dubois

Active on the Montreal scene since the mid-1960s, Claude Dubois—a singer-songwriter born in 1947 in Montreal (Quebec, Canada)—belongs to the tradition of francophone chanson while weaving in elements of folk, pop, and rock. First associated with the coffeehouse circuit and the era’s yé-yé trends, Dubois soon steered his work toward a more personal style of writing, supported by a distinctive vocal timbre and a taste for arrangements that combine acoustic guitars, tight rhythm sections, and hues that at times lean toward blues or reggae. His career took on a new dimension in the late 1970s when he joined Luc Plamondon and Michel Berger’s rock opera Starmania, for which he notably performed “Le blues du businessman” in 1978. Over the decades, he released numerous studio albums and live recordings and toured throughout Quebec and the francophone world, maintaining a repertoire centered on narrative songs, introspective ballads, and lyrics rooted in everyday life, establishing Claude Dubois as a lasting reference in Quebec’s singer-songwriter tradition.
