Begonia
Based in Winnipeg, Canada, Begonia is the project of singer-songwriter Alexa Dirks, who comes from Manitoba’s anglophone indie-pop scene. After gaining recognition as a member of the vocal group Chic Gamine, she developed with Begonia a voice-focused approach to songwriting that blends alternative pop, soul, R&B and electronic touches into compositions that are both melodic and introspective. Begonia emerged on the Canadian scene in the mid-2010s and in 2017 released her first EP, “Lady in Mind”, which established the main contours of her world, ranging from slow ballads to more rhythmic tracks. In 2019 she followed with the album “Fear”, where her recurring themes—vulnerability, relationships and identity—become clearer, set against arrangements that mix synths, choirs and more organic textures. With “Powder Blue”, released in 2023, Begonia continues to explore a soulful pop often cinematic in mood, driven by a strong emphasis on vocal harmonies. Active on numerous stages and festivals across Canada and the United States, Begonia belongs to a generation of artists who combine intimate songwriting with contemporary pop production.
