Orville Peck
A fringe mask and a cinematic Western universe set the scene for Orville Peck’s country project. Peck, a South African musician based in Canada, keeps his civilian identity deliberately in the background behind the persona of a masked crooner. He emerged in the late 2010s with an alternative country sound that draws on classic Nashville, Americana and darker influences from goth and shoegaze, characterised by a deep voice and reverb-heavy arrangements. The debut album Pony (2019) established this aesthetic—slow ballads, road-movie touches and queer cowboy imagery—while the EP Show Pony (2020) confirmed his turn toward a modern country, notably featuring a duet with Shania Twain. With Bronco (2022) he broadened his palette to a bigger sound, blending mid-tempo rhythms, denser orchestration and narratives of uprooting, desire and marginality. In 2024, Stampede: Vol. 1 collected covers and collaborations, including a track with Willie Nelson, situating him in a conversation between country heritage and contemporary reinterpretation. Active on North American and later European stages, Orville Peck navigates indie circuits, festivals and mid-size venues, cultivating a melancholic Western imagery where queer culture, cowboy iconography and traditional country songwriting intersect.
