Dmitry Baevsky

Born in 1976 in Leningrad, today Saint Petersburg, Dmitry Baevsky first trained on piano before dedicating himself to the alto saxophone in adolescence, then studied at the Musorgski College of Music. Settled in New York from 1996 to pursue the education at The New School, Dmitry Baevsky has since established himself on the city's jazz scene with a language rooted in hard bop and the post-bop tradition. His playing, centered on the alto, favors clean lines, flexible phrasing, and a defined sense of swing, in an aesthetic directly linked to acoustic New York jazz. After beginnings in Russian big bands and on the festivals of his country, he builds his career in the United States alongside musicians such as Cedar Walton, Jimmy Cobb, John Webber, Jeremy Pelt, Peter Bernstein, Jeb Patton, or Willie Jones III. His discography under his own name includes Introducing Dmitry Baevsky (2005), Some Other Spring (2009) and Down with It (2010). In quartet as in other tight formats, Dmitry Baevsky evolves in a repertoire where standards, bop composition and collective dialogue occupy a central place.
