Billy Cobham

Panamanian-American drummer and composer Billy Cobham was born in 1944 in Panama City and grew up in New York, where he trained in school orchestras and later in U.S. Army bands before emerging on the late-1960s jazz scene. First noticed alongside Horace Silver, Cobham then accompanied George Benson and took part in Miles Davis’s electric sessions around 1970, which placed him in the development of jazz fusion. His reputation was consolidated with John McLaughlin’s Mahavishnu Orchestra, whose aesthetic blended jazz, rock and Indian influences. As a solo artist, Cobham released the album Spectrum in 1973, followed notably by Crosswinds in 1974; these recordings established a compositional approach centered on complex rhythms, a highly articulated snare-drum technique, and a mix of funk, rock and contemporary jazz. Alternating leadership projects with collaborations in various fusion and modern jazz ensembles, Cobham performs regularly in Europe and North America while developing pedagogical work around the drum kit and rhythmic improvisation.
