Bassem Youssef
Born in Cairo in 1974, Bassem Youssef came from a medical background before turning to political satire and the stage. Trained as a cardiac surgeon, he launched the B+ Show on YouTube in 2011 amid the Egyptian revolution, and later extended that work to television with Al-Bernameg, a programme broadcast from 2011 to 2014 focused on news commentary, parody and media criticism. Youssef’s register blends political humour, social observation and personal narrative, with writing rooted in analysis of images, public discourse and mechanisms of power. After the show ended and he left Egypt, Bassem Youssef developed his activities across stage appearances, audiovisual formats and public speaking, in Arabic as well as English, notably in the United States. He published Revolution for Dummies: Laughing Through the Arab Spring in 2017. On stage, Youssef favors direct address, a stand-up rhythm and satire anchored in international current affairs, issues of representation and the political uses of information.
