Dany Doriz
Born Daniel Dorise in Boissy-Saint-Léger in 1941, Dany Doriz began with a classical training in saxophone, piano and percussion before choosing the vibraphone, which he made his primary instrument from the late 1950s. Early on the Paris scene, Dany Doriz played notably at Les Trois Mailletz and in the 1960s developed a career tied to swing and mainstream jazz, including quintet stints alongside Jean-Luc Ponty and Gérard Badini, as well as collaborations with Memphis Slim and Stéphane Grappelli. His playing, rooted in the tradition of classic jazz and the blues, continues the legacy of Lionel Hampton, with whom Dany Doriz played and recorded Ring Dem Vibes in 1976. From 1970 he took over the direction of the Caveau de la Huchette in Paris, a historic club that became central to his work as musician, bandleader and organizer. Over the decades he performed in trio, octet and big band formats while maintaining a regular presence on French and European stages. Verified recordings include Dany Doriz Octet (1991), My Favorite Vibes (1993), Jazzola with Marcel Azzola (1999), Jazz Fever with Sweet System (2004), Hommage à la Nouvelle-Orléans with Manu Dibango (2007) and Live at the Méridien (2007).
