Daniel Zimmermann

Born in Châtenay-Malabry in 1974, Daniel Zimmermann has established himself in the French jazz scene as a trombonist, tubist, arranger and composer, with a career spanning both contemporary music and large ensembles. Trained very early, and then at the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Paris, Zimmermann began by playing in funk, soul and salsa groups before amassing a wide range of live experiences with Claude Nougaro, Mister Gang, Sergent Garcia and Manu Dibango. His work subsequently evolved between modern jazz, groove, rock and Latin influences, with a trombone style that is supple, singing and highly rhythmic. After the Spice Bones projects, the Pourquery Quintet period and then DPZ, Daniel Zimmermann released Bone Machine under his own name in 2013, followed by Montagnes Russes in 2016, Dichotomie’s in 2019 and L’Homme à tête de chou in Uruguay in 2022. Alongside, he plays in varied contexts, from Éric Séva’s quartet to Frédéric Maurin’s National Jazz Orchestra, including projects led by Tony Allen, Jacques Vidal or Thomas de Pourquery. Daniel Zimmermann thus moves between small formations, orchestras and transversal collaborations, with writing that weaves improvisation, melody and a sense of arrangement.
