Dweezil Zappa

Born in Los Angeles in 1969, Dweezil Zappa grew up in Frank Zappa’s immediate circle, from whom he adopted—without limiting himself to it—a taste for complex forms, rhythmic breaks and guitar work. His personal path emerged as early as the 1980s with a rock sound nourished by Californian hard rock, pop and fusion, where precise solos sit alongside more direct structures. Dweezil Zappa released Havin’ a Bad Day in 1986, followed by Confessions in 1991, Shampoohorn in 1995 and Automatic in 2000 — records that show a shift from a sung rock format toward a more instrumental and detailed writing. From the mid-2000s, Dweezil Zappa devoted a large part of his stage activity to Zappa Plays Zappa, a project reinterpreting his father’s repertoire carried out with musicians connected to that world, including Steve Vai or Terry Bozzio at various times. On stage, Dweezil Zappa develops a style centered on a clear, agile guitar, at the crossroads of rock, jazz-rock and improvisation, with marked attention to arrangements and the faithful rendering of complex scores.
