Juana Molina
Born in Buenos Aires in 1961, Juana Molina grew up in an artistic environment—her father was a tango singer and her mother an actress and model—and spent several years in exile in Paris during the Argentine dictatorship. Back in Buenos Aires, she first became known around the turn of the 1990s as a television actress, but left that world in 1994 to devote herself to music. Her work occupies a hybrid space between folk, experimental pop and electronic music, characterized by a strong repetitive dimension built on loops, guitar and keyboard motifs, and a voice treated as a rhythmic instrument; her lyrics are mostly in Spanish. Beginning with Rara (1996), followed by Segundo (2000), Tres Cosas (2002), Son (2006), Un Día (2008), Wed 21 (2013) and Halo (2017), each album explores variations on this minimal, hypnotic approach, gradually incorporating denser structures and darker atmospheres. Released on Argentine and then international independent labels, she has developed a long-running touring career, often in compact line-ups, playing venues and festivals oriented toward experimental music and the singer‑songwriter tradition in the Americas, Europe and Japan, while occasionally collaborating with musicians from indie and electronic scenes.
