Wolf Eyes
Formed in 1996 in Michigan around Nate Young, Wolf Eyes belongs to the Royal Oak–Detroit axis and operated for a long time with a shifting lineup before stabilizing around Young and John Olson. Wolf Eyes develops music that sits between noise, industrial, experimental electronics and free improvisation, featuring saturated textures, abrasive loops, breaths, unstable frequencies and dislocated rhythms; the group also uses the term “trip metal” to describe part of this aesthetic. After numerous cassettes and releases on independent labels in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Wolf Eyes released Burned Mind in 2004 on Sub Pop and Human Animal in 2006 — two records that accompanied their move from a strictly underground circuit to wider experimental scenes. Their trajectory has been marked by several lineup changes, notably Aaron Dilloway, as well as regular collaborations with musicians from the noise and improvisation worlds, including Anthony Braxton. Wolf Eyes continued this path with No Answer: Lower Floors in 2013 and I Am a Problem: Mind in Pieces in 2023, maintaining a raw, physical and open sonic approach.
