Will Downing

Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1963, American singer and songwriter Will Downing has, since the late 1970s, built a career rooted in contemporary R&B, soul, and vocal jazz. An alumnus of Erasmus Hall High School, he first made a name for himself in early-1980s New York as a studio backing vocalist for various R&B and dance productions, before launching his solo path with the album “Will Downing” (1988). That debut, followed by “A Dream Fulfilled” (1991), which includes his sung version of “A Love Supreme,” established a direction defined by soul ballads and quiet-storm atmospheres. Throughout the 1990s, Downing refined this approach on albums such as “Love’s the Place to Be” (1993) and “Invitation Only” (1997), then broadened it around the turn of the 2000s with “All the Man You Need” (2000) and “After Tonight” (2007), at the crossroads of adult R&B and smooth jazz. Downing’s style centers on a baritone voice with poised phrasing, predominantly slow-to-mid tempos, and understated, melody-forward arrangements, focusing chiefly on themes of romance and intimacy. Across his many studio albums and themed projects—particularly around classic soul and more spiritual material—Downing has also multiplied duets and collaborations, including with Rachelle Ferrell and saxophonist Gerald Albright, and has remained a fixture on adult R&B circuits, jazz clubs, and international soul stages.
