Wolfgang Voigt
In Cologne, Wolfgang Voigt has developed since the late 1980s a central body of work in German electronic music, situated between minimal techno, ambient techno and more experimental forms focused on repetition and texture. Initially influenced by the acid house he discovered in London with Jörg Burger, he soon multiplied projects and pseudonyms, including Mike Ink, Love Inc., Studio 1 and above all Gas. With his brother Reinhard Voigt, Jörg Burger and Jürgen Paape he took part in opening the Delirium shop in 1993, the seed for Kompakt — the label he later co-founded with Michael Mayer and Jürgen Paape — while also launching Profan. Under his own name as well as under aliases, Wolfgang Voigt explores varied formats, from stripped-down techno grooves to dense, immersive ambient pieces. The Gas project remains one of the most identifiable expressions of this exploration, with the albums Gas (1996), Zauberberg (1997), Königsforst (1998) and Pop (2000), where diffuse orchestral loops meet a slowed techno pulse. At the same time, Voigt has worked as part of the duo Burger/Ink and released a very extensive catalogue built on variations of rhythm, sonic material and perception of space.
