Vastum

Active since the late 2000s in the San Francisco area, Vastum crafts a dark, abrasive form of death metal marked by heavy tempos, dense riffs and a pair of guttural vocals. Formed around musicians from the California metal scene, the band adopts an intentionally brutal yet structured aesthetic that blends old‑school influences, slow doom‑like passages and faster sections, with lyrics focused on the body, sexuality, trauma and the psyche. The group drew attention with Carnal Law in 2011, released by 20 Buck Spin, and solidified its direction with Patricidal Lust (2013) and Hole Below (2015), which deepened this mix of thick, dissonant and atmospheric death metal. Orificial Purge (2019) continued the approach by heightening the contrast between crushing sections and more labyrinthine motifs, followed by Inward to Gethsemane: The Scission of Souls (2023), which stretched structures and atmospheres even further. Regularly touring North America and Europe, Vastum favors venues and festivals oriented toward extreme metal, gradually consolidating a recognizable sonic identity at the intersection of direct death metal and more introspective songwriting.
