Tyondai Braxton

Born in New York in 1978, Tyondai Braxton has since the late 1990s developed a career that sits between experimental rock, electronics, and contemporary music. Initially active in various projects on the American indie scene, he joined Battles in 2002, a group with which he played guitar, keyboards, and sang until 2010, when the quartet established itself in the field of math rock and avant-rock with Mirrored in 2007. In parallel, Tyondai Braxton has pursued a solo career focused on repetitive forms, complex rhythmic constructions, and a constant dialogue between orchestral writing and electronic textures. His albums History That Has No Effect (2002), Central Market (2009), HIVE1 (2015), and Telekinesis (2022) show this evolution—from collage of loops and vocal motifs to larger pieces for ensemble, choir, or orchestra. Braxton has also presented his compositions with ensembles such as Wordless Music Orchestra, Bang on a Can All-Stars, Alarm Will Sound, London Sinfonietta, or the BBC Concert Orchestra, while occasionally collaborating with Philip Glass, Mouse on Mars, or Yarn/Wire. Based in a register where rock pulsation, electronic abstraction, and scholarly writing intersect, Tyondai Braxton has also taught at Princeton University since 2022.
