Trick Pony
Formed in Nashville, Tennessee, around Heidi Newfield, Keith Burns, and Ira Dean, Trick Pony is rooted in a high-energy American country sound, defined by a trio-based dynamic in which female vocals, harmonies, electric guitar, and bass intersect. The band formed in the late 1990s after experiences as backing musicians for Burns and Dean, and began to draw attention on Southern U.S. stages before signing with Warner Bros. Nashville. Trick Pony released its self-titled debut album in 2001, followed by On a Mission in 2002 and R.I.D.E. in 2005, blending contemporary country with Southern‑rock influences and direct choruses. Among the best-known tracks from this period are 'Pour Me', 'On a Night Like This', 'Just What I Do', and 'On a Mission'. In 2006, Heidi Newfield left Trick Pony to pursue a solo career; Aubrey Collins briefly replaced her as lead vocalist, before the remaining members gradually departed and the group dissolved in 2008. A reforming of the original lineup took place in 2013, though Ira Dean withdrew again shortly after. Trick Pony later returned with Pony Up in 2016 on Permian Records, extending a trajectory tied to Nashville's 2000s country scene.
