Tracey Thorn

Born in Brookmans Park in Hertfordshire, Tracey Thorn has, since the late 1970s, built a career that links pop, folk, indie rock and electronic music. She first appeared as part of Marine Girls, a minimalist trio active in the early 1980s, where her songwriting and singing established a spare, intimate tone, evident on Beach Party (1981) and Lazy Ways (1983). At the same time Thorn released the solo album A Distant Shore in 1982, then formed the duo Everything But the Girl with Ben Watt, whose evolution took them from acoustic, jazz-tinged pop towards more electronic and house-oriented forms. Outside that project Thorn has maintained a solo discography marked by Out of the Woods (2007), Love and Its Opposite (2010), Tinsel and Lights (2012) and Record (2018), with writing focused on everyday details, restrained arrangements and a low, instantly recognisable voice. Thorn has also collaborated with The Style Council, Working Week, The Go-Betweens, Massive Attack, Tiefschwarz, The Unbending Trees and John Grant, moving between songcraft, downtempo and dance music without abandoning a very direct approach to lyrics. The return of Everything But the Girl with Fuse in 2023 placed Tracey Thorn back in a dialogue between adult pop and contemporary electronic music.
