Threshold

Formed in Surrey in the late 1980s, Threshold sits within the British progressive metal scene with an approach that blends heavy power, developed structures, prominent keyboards, and melodic writing. The band forms around guitarist Karl Groom, who has remained a constant member since the beginnings, then Richard West, who joined in 1992 and remains at the heart of its sonic identity. After beginnings marked by several singer changes, Threshold released Wounded Land in 1993, then Psychedelicatessen in 1994, before alternating periods embodied by Damian Wilson, Andrew McDermott and Glynn Morgan. This instability in vocals did not prevent the band from building a steady discography, with Extinct Instinct in 1997, Clone in 1998, Hypothetical in 2001, Critical Mass in 2002, Subsurface in 2004, and Dead Reckoning in 2007—albums that establish a style based on precise riffs, tempos often mid-range, clear choruses, and harmonic work inherited as much from metal as from progressive rock. Threshold then continued with March of Progress in 2012, For the Journey in 2014, Legends of the Shires in 2017, and Dividing Lines in 2022. Regularly present on European progressive metal stages, Threshold today functions as a band firmly anchored in the long term, with Glynn Morgan on vocals, Johanne James on drums, and Steve Anderson on bass alongside Groom and West.
