Three Dog Night

Formed in Los Angeles in 1967, the American group Three Dog Night originally brought together singers Danny Hutton, Cory Wells, and Chuck Negron, supported by a core of rock musicians from the California scene. Straddling pop rock, FM rock, and soft rock with a dose of soul influence, Three Dog Night leaned on three-part vocal arrangements and a repertoire largely drawn from songs written by others, notably Harry Nilsson, Randy Newman, Hoyt Axton, Paul Williams, and Laura Nyro. After a self-titled debut in 1968, the band followed in the early 1970s with a run of studio albums—Suitable for Framing (1969), It Ain’t Easy (1970), Naturally (1970), Harmony (1971), and Seven Separate Fools (1972)—which secured their place in the North American rock landscape through numerous radio singles. Intensive touring, performances in major venues, and television appearances marked this period of sustained activity up to American Pastime in 1976, followed by a breakup and subsequent reformations from the 1980s onward. Despite lineup changes, Three Dog Night remains most closely associated with the live stage, where the group continues to perform a repertoire centered on its late-1960s and early-1970s recordings.
