The Weather Girls

Formed in San Francisco in the late 1970s, The Weather Girls initially brought together Martha Wash and Izora Armstead, two gospel‑raised backing singers who made their mark on the disco scene by regularly supporting Sylvester under the name Two Tons O’ Fun. The American duo developed a repertoire of soul, disco and R&B driven by powerful harmonies before adopting the name The Weather Girls in the early 1980s during the recording of the single “It’s Raining Men” in 1982, which aligns with the Hi‑NRG and club culture aesthetic. Under this identity, The Weather Girls released, among others, the albums “Success” (1983), “Big Girls Don’t Cry” (1985) and “The Weather Girls” (1988), and established themselves on dance and pop stages across the United States and Europe with a repertoire blending humour, festive themes and their gospel heritage. In the late 1980s Martha Wash moved toward a career as a studio vocalist and solo performer, while Izora Armstead revived The Weather Girls in the early 1990s in Germany alongside her daughter Dynelle Rhodes, continuing the group’s trajectory in a house and eurodance register with releases such as “Double Tons of Fun” (1993) and “Puttin’ On The Hits” (1999), followed by regular tours on dance and LGBTQ+ stages.
