The Seeds

Formed in Los Angeles in 1965 around Sky Saxon, Jan Savage, Daryl Hooper and Rick Andridge, The Seeds began in raw, tense garage rock before expanding their approach toward psychedelic rock and acid rock. The Seeds' sound relied on simple riffs, a prominent organ and Saxon's dry, almost incantatory voice, with a direct energy that marked their early recordings. After the single "Can't Seem to Make You Mine", the national breakthrough came with "Pushin' Too Hard" in 1966, followed by "Mr. Farmer" and "A Thousand Shadows". The Seeds released The Seeds (1966) and A Web of Sound (1966), then Future (1967), a more psychedelic album with broader arrangements. In 1967 they also issued A Full Spoon of Seedy Blues, credited to The Sky Saxon Blues Band, and in 1968 Raw & Alive: The Seeds in Concert at Merlin’s Music Box. By the late 1960s the band became Sky Saxon and the Seeds and partly changed its lineup. The Seeds briefly reformed in 1989, then toured again from 2003 around Sky Saxon, releasing Red Planet (2004) and Back to the Garden (2008). Since 2017, Daryl Hooper has revived The Seeds with a new lineup.
