The Romantics

Born on Detroit’s rock scene in the late 1970s, The Romantics are part of the power pop and new wave currents that blend direct melodies, taut guitars and the legacy of the British Invasion. Formed in 1977 around Wally Palmar and Mike Skill, the band initially honed its material in local clubs, relying on singable choruses, tight vocal harmonies and a compact garage-rock sound. The Romantics released a self-titled debut in 1980, followed the same year by National Breakout and by Strictly Personal in 1981, records that cemented the group’s rhythmic, straightforward and effective aesthetic between rock, pop and touches of new wave. With In Heat in 1983 and Rhythm Romance in 1985, The Romantics refined a songwriting approach more geared toward radio formats while retaining an energetic rock foundation and very compact song structures. After a period of reduced activity, they returned to the studio with 61/49 in 2003, an album marked by a more rootsy atmosphere and a pronounced return to the rhythm-and-blues and rock’n’roll influences of their beginnings. Despite several lineup changes over the years, The Romantics have remained centered on the chemistry of their founding members and continue to perform regularly, revisiting a repertoire that links late-1970s power pop to a more classic, guitar-led rock with vocal harmonies.
