Tom McRae

Born in 1969 in Chelmsford, Essex, England, Tom McRae developed a songwriting style rooted in folk, acoustic rock and a chamber-music approach, favoring dark atmospheres and spare arrangements. After emerging on the London scene in the late 1990s, he released his eponymous debut album "Tom McRae" in 2000; it was nominated for the Mercury Prize in 2001 and established him as a writer of introspective ballads and subtly crafted songs. McRae followed with "Just Like Blood" (2003), "All Maps Welcome" (2005) and "King of Cards" (2007), where he honed a sound blending acoustic guitars, strings and electric touches. With "The Alphabet of Hurricanes" (2010), then "From The Lowlands" (2012) and "Did I Sleep and Miss the Border?" (2015), his writing grew denser around recurring themes such as doubt, belief and political disillusionment. Living between the UK and the US, he alternates solo tours and tight ensembles—particularly across continental Europe—and continued this trajectory in the studio with "Ah, The World! Oh, The World!" released in 2023, which extends his work on intimate songs at the intersection of folk and indie pop.
