The Fixx
Formed in London in 1979 around singer Cy Curnin and drummer Adam Woods, initially under the names Portraits and then The Fix, the band adopted the definitive name The Fixx when they signed with MCA. In the early 1980s they developed a songwriting approach that sat between new wave, pop rock and art rock, driven by Rupert Greenall’s keyboards, Jamie West‑Oram’s taut guitars and a crisp rhythm section often marked by repetitive motifs and a distinctively British melodic tension. After Shuttered Room (1982), The Fixx refined this aesthetic on Reach the Beach (1983), followed by Phantoms (1984) and Walkabout (1986), with songs built on restrained vocal lines, precise choruses and a production that blends synthetic coolness with rock energy. Bassist Dan K. Brown joined in 1983, stepped away in the 1990s and rejoined the lineup in 2008. Over the decades The Fixx have remained active on stage and continued their discography with Calm Animals (1989), Ink (1991), Elemental (1998), Want That Life (2003), Beautiful Friction (2012) and Every Five Seconds (2022). Cy Curnin and Jamie West‑Oram also contributed to Tina Turner’s album Private Dancer (1984), a notable milestone that highlights the band’s ties to the rock and pop scene of that period.
