The Church
Founded in Sydney in 1980, The Church initially emerged from the Australian post‑punk and new wave scene before developing an atmospheric rock sound that blends neo‑psychedelia, jangle pop and dream pop. Centered on bassist and singer Steve Kilbey, the band was structured as a guitar quartet with shifting line‑ups; its cohesion relied on strong melodic lines, bright, reverberant guitars and a taste for slow, hypnotic moods. The Church broke out on the Australian indie scene in the early 1980s with Of Skins and Heart (1981), then expanded its songwriting on The Blurred Crusade (1982) and Heyday (1985). Recording Starfish (1988) in the United States placed the band on the international rock touring circuit; afterwards they continued studio work while focusing on sonic textures and detailed arrangements. The 1990s saw a more expansive, experimental direction with Priest=Aura (1992) and Sometime Anywhere (1994), followed by a return to tighter formats in the 2000s with Untitled #23 (2009). Still active, The Church has maintained a steady output in the 21st century — including Further/Deeper (2014), Man Woman Life Death Infinity (2017) and The Hypnogogue (2023) — and continues to appear on rock and psychedelic stages in Australia, Europe and North America.
