Tesla

In the early 1980s in Sacramento, California, Tesla took shape around vocalist Jeff Keith, guitarists Frank Hannon and Tommy Skeoch, bassist Brian Wheat, and drummer Troy Luccketta, initially performing as City Kidd before adopting in 1986 a name paying tribute to inventor Nikola Tesla. Aligned with the West Coast wave of melodic hard rock and heavy metal, the band forged a sound marked by blues-leaning guitars, a classic-rock backbone, and a recurring taste for acoustic formats. Their debut studio album, Mechanical Resonance, arrived in 1986, followed by The Great Radio Controversy in 1989 and Psychotic Supper in 1991, which put Tesla on major stages across North America and Europe. The 1990 live release Five Man Acoustical Jam highlighted a more stripped-down side that Tesla would revisit from time to time. After Bust a Nut in 1994, the band slowed down before regrouping in the early 2000s with Into the Now (2004), then the albums Real to Reel (2007), Forever More (2008), Simplicity (2014), and Shock (2019). Despite lineup changes—notably Tommy Skeoch’s departure and the addition of guitarist Dave Rude—Tesla has maintained a steady live presence and remains associated with no-frills hard rock blending classic riffs, electric ballads, and acoustic passages.
