Suzi Quatro

Born in Detroit in 1950, Suzi Quatro grew up in a musical family and learned bass and vocals at an early age, performing with her sisters in the all‑female band The Pleasure Seekers and later in Cradle on the local late‑1960s rock scene. Spotted by producer Mickie Most, she moved to London in 1971 and signed with Rak Records, aligning with the glam rock current that was then dominant in the UK. In regular collaboration with songwriters Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman, she recorded a series of rock singles with strong riffs and pop choruses — including Can the Can in 1973, followed by 48 Crash and Devil Gate Drive — which established her in the European rock landscape. Her debut album Suzi Quatro was released in 1973, followed by Quatro in 1974 and Your Mamma Won’t Like Me in 1975, showcasing a style between hard rock, boogie and more melodic pop rock. By the late 1970s she gravitated toward softer rock and country‑pop with If You Knew Suzi… (1978), notably featuring the duet Stumblin’ In with Chris Norman. Simultaneously, she appeared on American television in the series Happy Days as Leather Tuscadero, extending her visibility beyond the strictly musical sphere. Active onstage and in the studio throughout her career, she alternates solo projects, more contemporary pop‑rock formats and collaborations — such as the joint album Face to Face with KT Tunstall in 2023 — while retaining the rock grounding that defines her trajectory.
