Superchunk

Formed in 1989 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Superchunk entered the American indie rock scene with a taut, fast and melodic sound that sits between punk rock, alternative rock, noise pop and a DIY-influenced lo-fi approach. Centered on Mac McCaughan, Laura Ballance and Jim Wilbur, the band started with the single "Slack Motherfucker" and released the albums "Superchunk" (1990) and "No Pocky for Kitty" (1991), before issuing several notable records in the 1990s such as "On the Mouth" (1993), "Foolish" (1994), "Here’s Where the Strings Come In" (1995), "Indoor Living" (1997) and "Come Pick Me Up" (1999). Meanwhile McCaughan and Ballance founded Merge Records, initially to support their own releases and those of like-minded bands. After "Here’s to Shutting Up" (2001), Superchunk slowed its activity but returned with "Majesty Shredding" (2010), followed by "I Hate Music" (2013), "What a Time to Be Alive" (2018), "Wild Loneliness" (2022) and "Songs in the Key of Yikes" (2025). For many years backed by drummer Jon Wurster, Superchunk has played both the independent club circuit and festivals such as Lollapalooza, Coachella and All Tomorrow’s Parties. Since 2023 Laura King has been on drums, while Laura Ballance, who has not toured since 2013, remains a member of the band.
