Sud Sound System

Born in Salento, around Lecce, in the late 1980s, Sud Sound System from 1989 developed a formula that links Jamaican raggamuffin and dancehall reggae with the languages and rhythms of southern Italy—particularly the Salento dialect, the pizzica and certain inflections of the tarantella. Initially active in sound system circuits, social centres and the Italian alternative scene, Sud Sound System drew attention with the maxi Fuecu/T’a sciuta bona in 1991, then refined their identity on Comu na petra (1996), where the meeting of reggae and local traditions becomes central. The collective, whose core stabilised around Don Rico, Nandu Popu and Terron Fabio, continued this trajectory with Reggae party (1999), Musica musica (2001) and Lontano (2003), an album awarded a Targa Tenco in the category for works in dialect. Over the years Sud Sound System has also collaborated with artists such as Neffa, General Levy, Luciano, Richie Stephens and Riva Starr, while remaining tied to the Salento scene through its productions and side projects. The albums Dammene ancora (2008), Ultimamente (2010), Sta tornu (2014), Eternal Vibes (2017) and Intelligenza naturale (2024) extend a repertoire where social awareness, party culture and territorial rootedness intersect.
