Styx

Formed in Chicago in the early 1970s, Styx established itself on the American rock scene by blending progressive rock, hard rock, and pop rock with a pronounced theatrical streak. The band coalesced around keyboardist and vocalist Dennis DeYoung, guitarists James Young and Tommy Shaw, and brothers Chuck and John Panozzo, who shaped the group’s sound through carefully crafted vocal harmonies, melodic keyboards, and guitars often geared toward arena rock. After early, more progressive-leaning albums such as “Styx” (1972), “Styx II” (1973), and “Equinox” (1975), Styx moved toward a more accessible format with “The Grand Illusion” (1977), “Pieces of Eight” (1978), and “Cornerstone” (1979), where rock tracks and ballads coexist. The 1980s brought narrative-driven concepts with “Paradise Theatre” (1981) and “Kilroy Was Here” (1983), followed by a more intermittent period and then an extended return to the studio, exemplified by “Brave New World” (1999), “The Mission” (2017), and “Crash of the Crown” (2021). Still active on North American and international stages, Styx now operates largely within the classic-rock circuit, alternating new releases with tours focused on its historic repertoire.
