The Godfathers

Formed in London in 1985 around brothers Peter and Chris Coyne after the end of The Sid Presley Experience, The Godfathers develop a nerve rock at the crossroads of punk, British rhythm and blues and alternative rock, with short, direct and often tense songs. The band first gained attention on the independent circuit with Hit by Hit in 1986, before signing with Epic and releasing Birth, School, Work, Death in 1988, then More Songs About Love and Hate in 1989 and Unreal World in 1991. Through lineup changes, The Godfathers maintain a frontal approach, led by Peter Coyne's dry voice, sharp guitars and a strong sense of the rock chorus without detours. After an initial period of activity ending in 2000, The Godfathers reformed in 2008 and returned to the stage in the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States. This second phase produced several new recordings, including Jukebox Fury in 2013, A Big Bad Beautiful Noise in 2017 and Alpha Beta Gamma Delta in 2022. Still led by Peter Coyne, The Godfathers today operate as a quintet and remain attached to a raw, compact and combative aesthetic, inherited from pub rock, garage rock and English post-punk.
