Steve Coleman

An alto saxophonist and composer born in Chicago in 1956, Steve Coleman has developed since the early 1980s a jazz approach focused on rhythmic systems and the structure of improvisation. After playing in the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis orchestra he settled in New York, participating in the club and loft scene before founding the M-Base collective, which brought together several musicians around ideas of collective creation and forms derived from African‑American music. As leader of his group Five Elements he recorded Motherland Pulse in 1985, followed by a series of albums blending contemporary jazz, funk, complex meters and cyclical grooves, up to releases such as Harvesting Semblances and Affinities (2010), Functional Arrhythmias (2013), Synovial Joints (2015) and Morphogenesis (2017). His work incorporates influences from travels and research into African diaspora traditions—particularly in West Africa, Cuba and India—and rests on frequent collaborations with musicians like Dave Holland and Cassandra Wilson. Coleman's writing, often conceived for compact ensembles, articulates angular melodic lines, polyrhythms and collective improvisation, with composition serving as a matrix for real‑time variation.
