The Egyptian Lover
Active since the early 1980s in Los Angeles, The Egyptian Lover, born Greg Broussard, was part of the first wave of West Coast electro and hip-hop. Initially a DJ with the party collective Uncle Jamm’s Army, he developed a style built on programmed, uptempo rhythms, repetitive synth lines, spoken or half-sung vocals, and a strong funk influence. His early 12-inch singles in the mid-1980s, notably the tracks from the album On the Nile (1984), established an aesthetic mixing minimalist rap, futuristic imagery, and club-culture references. He followed with One Track Mind (1986) and Filthy (1988), remaining tied to the California electro-rap scene and Los Angeles hip-hop parties. After a quieter period in the 1990s marked by Back from the Tomb (1994), he re-emerged in the mid-2000s with Platinum Pyramids (2005), then released a series of retro-leaning records like 1984 (2015) and 1985 (2018) that extended his old-school approach. Still active as a DJ, The Egyptian Lover regularly tours Europe and North America, revisiting his classics while maintaining a direct electro-funk sound made for dance floors and clubs.
