Soweto Gospel Choir
Founded in Soweto, South Africa, in 2002 by David Mulovhedzi and Beverly Bryer with producers Andrew Kay, David Vigo and Cliff Hocking, the Soweto Gospel Choir brings together more than thirty singers around a repertoire that blends South African gospel, African‑American spirituals, reggae and pop adaptations. The choir first drew international attention by taking part in the inaugural 46664 concert associated with Nelson Mandela, after which it toured extensively and performed at events such as Live Earth in 2007 and the final draw for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in Cape Town. Its discography includes Voices from Heaven (2005), Blessed (2006), African Spirit (2007), Grace (2010), Freedom (2018), Hope (2022) and History of House, released in 2024 with Latroit and Groove Terminator. The Soweto Gospel Choir’s path has also intersected with other artists and composers: they recorded a cover of "Valley of Tears" for a Fats Domino tribute album featuring Robert Plant, appear on "Down to Earth" by Peter Gabriel and Thomas Newman for the film WALL‑E, and contributed to Christopher Tin’s "Baba Yetu." The choir is also featured on several tracks of Peter Gabriel’s album I/O.
