The Boxer Rebellion
Formed in early 2000s London, The Boxer Rebellion coalesced around American singer and multi‑instrumentalist Nathan Nicholson, British drummer Piers Hewitt, bassist Adam Harrison and Australian guitarist Todd Howe, who remained with the band until the mid‑2010s. Situated within the indie rock and alternative scenes, the band cultivated a melodic, expansive sound centered on guitars, gradual builds of tension and a frequently melancholic vocal, with occasional nods to post‑Britpop and a measured use of more atmospheric textures. They gained attention in London through a string of shows in small independent venues before releasing their debut album Exits in 2005 and Union in 2009—initially issued digitally—which reinforced the quartet’s reputation for a highly autonomous production approach. In 2011 The Boxer Rebellion worked with producer Ethan Johns on The Cold Still, which emphasized a more streamlined songwriting, followed by Promises in 2013, marked by brighter structures while remaining introspective. Ocean by Ocean (2016) and Ghost Alive (2018) continued this evolution, further exploring mood and dynamic nuance. At the same time, their music circulated in various visual contexts—through placements in films and TV series—helping the band reach audiences beyond the Anglo‑Saxon independent live scene.
