Soulburn
Emerging from the Dutch extreme metal scene, Soulburn formed in the mid-1990s around Eric Daniels and Bob Bagchus, joined by Wannes Gubbels after their stint in Asphyx. From the outset Soulburn moved away from pure death metal to develop a sound in which black metal and doom occupy central roles, featuring heavy riffs, often slow tempos and a dark, almost ritual atmosphere. This first period culminated in the album Feeding on Angels in 1998, before a long hiatus. Soulburn resumed activity in 2014 with a new lineup including Daniels, Remco Kreft, Twan van Geel and Bagchus, relaunching its discography with The Suffocating Darkness that same year, followed by Earthless Pagan Spirit in 2016. The EP Carpe Noctem followed in 2018, and Noa’s d’ark arrived in 2020. Across these releases Soulburn refined an austere blackened doom/death aesthetic, rooted in 1990s extreme metal but open to more extended compositions and a more oppressive atmosphere. Since then Soulburn has operated primarily within European circuits associated with the death, black and doom scenes.
