Talco
Based in Marghera, in the industrial suburbs of Venice, Italy, Talco has been developing since the early 2000s a ska‑punk sound strongly tinged with punk rock, Mediterranean folk and so‑called patchanka sonorities. The band, built around a very prominent brass section, gradually established itself on Europe’s alternative stages — independent venues, self‑run squats and activist festivals — with regular tours in Italy, Germany, Spain and beyond. Talco’s early albums, from 'Tutti Assolti' (2004) to 'Combat Circus' (2006) and 'Mazel Tov' (2008), established a direct songwriting approach, carried by Italian lyrics on political, antifascist and social themes. With 'La Cretina Commedia' (2010), 'Gran Galà' (2012) and 'Silent Town' (2015), Talco refined a fast, melodic style in which punk riffs, danceable rhythms and brass arrangements revolve around collective choruses often sung back by the audience at concerts. The album 'And The Winner Isn't' (2018) and 'Locktown' (2020), recorded during the lockdown period, continued this approach by incorporating more melodic nuances while preserving Talco’s militant grounding. With 'Videogame' (2022) the band pursues the exploration of a sound it calls 'punkchanka', blending an apparently festive energy with critical commentary on precariousness, popular football and abuses of power, placing Talco at the crossroads of ska‑punk, politically engaged rock and a tradition of Italian social song.
