Stomy Bugsy
Born in Paris in 1972 and raised in Sarcelles and the northern part of the capital, Stomy Bugsy, whose real name is Gilles Duarte, established himself in the early 1990s on the French rap scene with Ministère A.M.E.R., a group he founded with Passi and Hamed Daye. Their lyrics, rooted in suburban realities, marked the era with Pourquoi tant de haine (1992) and 95200 (1994). As a solo artist, from Le Calibre qu’il te faut (1996) onward Stomy Bugsy developed a more melodic writing style, nourished by gangsta rap, G‑funk, hardcore rap and touches of RnB, in a register that combines street narratives, sung choruses and imagery borrowed from cinema. This direction continued on Quelques balles de plus pour... le calibre qu’il te faut (1998), Trop jeune pour mourir (2000), 4e round (2003), Rimes passionnelles (2007) and Royalties (2015). Stomy Bugsy also figures in the history of Secteur Ä, alongside Passi, Doc Gynéco, Ärsenik and Nèg’ Marrons, and he is part of the Cape‑Verdean collective La MC Malcriado. Alongside music, he pursued an acting career in film and television while remaining associated with the French rap scenes of the 1990s and 2000s.
