Steve Vai
Born in Carle Place, New York, Steve Vai developed early a guitar style shaped by rock, hard rock, heavy metal and a distinctly progressive approach to composition. Trained notably by Joe Satriani, he entered the professional scene in the late 1970s as a transcriber for Frank Zappa before joining Zappa’s band from 1980 to 1983 — a decisive period for his approach to composition and complex rhythms. After his first solo album, Flex-Able (1984), he passed through Alcatrazz, then joined David Lee Roth on Eat ’Em and Smile (1986) and Skyscraper (1988), and later played with Whitesnake on Slip of the Tongue (1989). At the same time Vai built a personal discography centered on dense, melodic instrumental rock featuring fast phrasing, harmonizations, dynamic contrasts and structures sometimes close to progressive metal. Passion and Warfare (1990) remains a key landmark of this period, followed by Sex & Religion (1993), Fire Garden (1996), The Ultra Zone (1999), Real Illusions: Reflections (2005), The Story of Light (2012), Modern Primitive (2016), Inviolate (2022) and Vai/Gash (2023). Present on G3 tours, in the Beat project around King Crimson’s 1980s repertoire, and in numerous studio and live collaborations, Steve Vai continues to develop a highly identifiable instrumental language.
