Steel Pulse
Formed in 1975 in Handsworth, a Birmingham neighborhood tied to the history of Caribbean communities in the UK, Steel Pulse is part of British reggae with a strong roots foundation, vocal harmonies influenced by Jamaican reggae and lyrics that focus on racism, social inequalities and the realities of the black diaspora. Founded by David Hinds, Basil Gabbidon and Ronald McQueen, Steel Pulse emerged in the late 1970s in the context of Rock Against Racism and the dialogue between the reggae and punk scenes in England. The albums Handsworth Revolution (1978) and Tribute to the Martyrs (1979) established a spare, tense sound built on bass, offbeats, choruses and a pronounced political dimension. Throughout the 1980s, Steel Pulse extended its reach beyond the UK with True Democracy (1982), Earth Crisis (1984) and Babylon the Bandit (1986), while evolving toward fuller productions that sometimes incorporated soul, pop and dancehall elements without abandoning its roots grounding. Remaining active on international stages, Steel Pulse continued its trajectory centered on David Hinds, the group's leading figure, with releases such as African Holocaust (2004) and Mass Manipulation (2019).
