Sa-Roc
Born Assata Perkins in Southeast Washington, D.C., Sa-Roc develops rap anchored in conscious hip-hop, spoken word and dense writing, carried by a precise flow and a constant attention to themes of identity, transmission and social justice. Active since the 2000s, she first builds her career in the independent circuit, in close connection with producer Sol Messiah, whom she met in 2002, with whom she shapes an abundant discography blending introspection, spiritual references and social critique. This collaboration is notably heard on projects like Supernova (2008), Journey of the Starseed (2010), The Book of Light (2013) or The Legend of Black Moses (2015). Sa-Roc begins performing on stage in the early 2010s and gradually appears in broader contexts, with appearances at hip-hop festivals and occasional collaborations with David Banner, Black Thought or Brother Ali. In 2016, Sa-Roc joined the Rhymesayers label, where she pursues an approach to rap centred on clarity of text and rhythmic mastery. Her album The Sharecropper’s Daughter, released in 2020, prolongs this trajectory with a sound that blends boom bap, soul and contemporary productions without losing the weight accorded to the voice and to the verb.
