Soft Cell
Soft Cell is a synth-pop duo formed in the late 1970s in Leeds, England, bringing together singer Marc Almond and keyboardist David Ball, who first met at Leeds Polytechnic. Initially noticed on the Some Bizzare compilation and with their self-released EP Mutant Moments (1980), Soft Cell was part of the British new wave while developing a minimalist electronic aesthetic driven by drum machines, repetitive synth lines and highly expressive vocals. Their 1981 cover of Gloria Jones’s “Tainted Love” established the duo internationally and paved the way for the album Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret (1981), whose lyrics focus on urban nightlife, intimate relationships and social margins. They followed with The Art of Falling Apart (1983) and This Last Night in Sodom (1984), records that grew darker and denser, before splitting in the mid-1980s so both musicians could pursue individual projects. Soft Cell reformed in the early 2000s for Cruelty Without Beauty (2002) and returned to stages and studios from the late 2010s onward, notably with *Happiness Not Included (2022), continuing a blend of electronic pop, melancholic atmospheres and soul references that remains central to the duo’s identity.
