Slowdive

Formed in Reading, England, in 1989 around Neil Halstead and Rachel Goswell, Slowdive initially established themselves on the British shoegaze scene with a sound in which heavily reverberant guitars, ethereal vocals and melodic songwriting close to dream pop produced tracks that are at once misty and precise. The band, soon stabilised as a quintet with Christian Savill, Nick Chaplin and Simon Scott, released several EPs before the album Just for a Day in 1991 and then Souvlaki in 1993, a central record of this first period, notably featuring a collaboration with Brian Eno on two tracks. With Pygmalion in 1995 Slowdive shifted their aesthetic toward more stripped‑down, ambient and post‑rock forms, before splitting up that same year; Halstead and Goswell then continued with Mojave 3. Reformed in 2014 with Simon Scott back on drums, Slowdive returned to the international stage and extended their discography with Slowdive (2017) and Everything Is Alive (2023). From the start, Slowdive have combined enveloping textures, often slowed tempos and a subtle attention to sonic space, without abandoning a rock foundation.
