Rawayana
Born out of Caracas’s alternative scene, the Venezuelan band Rawayana has been developing since the late 2000s a blend of reggae, rock, pop and Caribbean music, driven by a warm sound and often mid‑tempo beats. Formed in 2007, the quartet first established itself in Venezuela before gradually expanding across Latin America through numerous concerts and regional tours. Their debut album, “Licencia para ser libre” (2011), lays down a reggae‑and‑rock foundation with slightly psychedelic touches, which “Rawayanaland” (2013) expands with funk and more pronounced Latin rhythms. With “Trippy Caribbean” (2016), Rawayana pushes the Caribbean aesthetic further, focusing on supple grooves, prominent vocal harmonies and a relaxed atmosphere that remains central to their music. The 2021 record “Cuando los Acéfalos Predominan” introduces darker hues and elements borrowed from alternative pop and hip‑hop, while preserving Rawayana’s characteristic reggae‑fusion base. Across these phases, the band asserts a sonic identity where Latin rock influences, contemporary reggae and melodic songwriting in Spanish intersect.
