Secret Cinema

Under the name Secret Cinema, Jeroen Verheij has built a central presence in the Dutch techno and house scenes since the early 1990s. Born in Rotterdam in 1971, the producer and live act first rooted himself in the city's record shops and labels before releasing his initial tracks under various aliases, including Meng Syndicate and Grooveyard. Secret Cinema became more visible in the mid-1990s with the 1994 single “Timeless Altitude,” while the Grooveyard project later produced “Mary Go Wild” in 1996 and “Let The Music Be Your Guide” in 2000, the latter in collaboration with Michel de Hey, a frequent partner of Verheij. Secret Cinema’s aesthetic pairs a direct techno foundation with softer, melodic house elements, favouring readable club structures and gradual variations. Over the years Secret Cinema has also released several albums—White Men Can’t Funk (2001), Skunk & Espresso (2006) and Minerals (2011)—and launched the Gem Records label. Between club productions, remixes and live performances, Secret Cinema remains tied to a Dutch interpretation of techno: functional, rhythmic and open to warmer forms.
