Pile

Born within Boston’s independent scene, Pile initially coalesced around Rick Maguire’s compositions before evolving into a full-fledged band anchored in a taut, shape-shifting rock sound. Straddling indie rock, noise rock, and post-hardcore—often with broken tempos—their music leans on dense guitars, sharply etched dynamics, and vocals that oscillate between restraint and tension, paired with introspective lyrics. After self-recorded beginnings in the late 2000s, the project came into its own with albums such as "Jerk Routine" (2009) and "Magic Isn’t Real" (2010), then secured a lasting place in the American DIY circuit through steady touring and releases on independent labels. "Dripping" (2012) and "You’re Better Than This" (2015) signaled a turn toward more sinuous structures and a more fragmented rhythmic writing, while "A Hairshirt of Purpose" (2017) and "Green and Gray" (2019) broadened the palette, where slow passages coexist with noisy eruptions. With "In the Corners of a Sphere-Filled Room" (2021), Pile explored a more experimental, largely instrumental vein before returning to a more direct, frontal format on "All Fiction" (2023), confirming a trajectory in which each record subtly shifts the band’s center of gravity without breaking from the aesthetic forged since its Boston origins.
